Warm minimalism in a recently completed project by Belgian architect Dieter Vander Velpen

Dieter Vander Velpen is a Belgian architect and owner of Dieter Vander Velpen Architects, an architecture and interior design office based in Antwerp, specializing in architecture and interior design of residential and hospitality projects.

I am pretty sure that a lot of you will remember this picture of a black and white marble bathroom by Dieter’s hand, shared around the interior design world a few years ago.

When I recently came across this picture of a double-height library cupboard in the lobby of an office project, and that was posted on Dieter’s Instagram page, I definitely wanted to see more of it. This is absolutely stunning design!

Visiting Dieter’s website I soon discovered that this cabinet was installed in the HQ lobby of the Antwerp based company Tomorrowland, and part of a recently completed office project. Dieter Vander Velpen Architects had been commissioned with the complete architectural remoddeling and interior design of the company’s headquarters.

The doors of the lobby cabinet have 6m long glass panels made in one piece.

‘Creating and bringing in this cabinet was a challenge!’ tells Dieter.

I am absolutely aware of that as I do know that manufacturing double height cabinet furniture and having it installed is rather complex.

The contemporary designed lobby with its warm material chosen palette. Dieter achieved to create an informal atmosphere that is hospitable and full of warmth.

A palpable orientalism in the office’s dining room. The Japanese inspired interior design and the use of warm materials make this room so very unique.

It’s used both as a cosy lunch spot as well as an informal meeting space throughout the day.

Another meeting room featuring a warm material palette of natural oak and brass. Jean Prouvé chairs around the brass table.

The black steel frames, the reclaimed wooden desks and the oak panelling create a warm atmosphere at the office.

The office project’s kitchen. Again here Dieter used a warm material palette of rough, patinated bronze, concrete and natural oak.

I loved this picture of Dieter at the steel workshop, testing a sculptural staircase he designed for a private project.
