The International Interior Design Exhibition, newest annual event in Belgium

The International Interior Design Exhibition (IIDE) is the newest annual event in Belgium, launched by Fleur Rossdale, interior designer and founder of the highly renowned and pioneering British Interior Design Exhibition (BIDE) during the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Fleur, who is now living in Belgium, has chosen Brussels to launch IIDE as an expansion of BIDE, because of Belgium’s cultural heritage.

Belgium is a country with a high potential for artistry and craftsmanship, and I am totally agree with the statement of Belgian interior designer Gert Voorjans :

‘Our craftsmanship deserves to be highlighted, and it needn’t always have to be in Paris or Milan, to do that. Most appropriate place to thrust our craftspeople and their skills into the spotlight is our own country.’

IIDE features 10 Belgian and international interior designers, who are defining their point of view towards their job, their choices of materials, colours, etc. And on top, unlike other exhibitions and interior design fairs, the participating designers do share their supplier sources and craftsmen they love to work with to realize their projects.

Instead of traditional booths, IIDE unfolds a set of individually designed, newly decorated rooms. Visitors are able to discuss the design with the designer and can even source a lot of his suppliers (furniture, flooring, lighting, fabrics, art) also present at the exhibition.

Next to the designers’ room compositions, visitors can discover work of the best design icons as Jules Wabbes, Xavier Lust and more.

The exhibition is held at Hôtel de la Poste, a former administrative centre, located in the heart of the city. The building, constructed in 1904, was recently refurbished in order to offer a venue with a unique character.

The entrance at Hôtel de la Poste is decorated by Michel Penneman, one of the participating designers.

Last year Fleur Rossdale introduced us to the beautiful building of Hôtel de la Poste by a short video she posted on YouTube.

Click here to watch this video. Very nice to see the architecture of this empty room before staging.

Minister Sven Gatz, Minister of Culture in Belgium and Mme Cécile Jodogne, Secretary of State for the Brussels Region cut the ribbon to open the exhibition.

The informal atmosphere and ambiance created at IIDE, especially in the grand entrance hall, does remind me of the 19th C. ‘fin de siècle’ literary salons, where writers, poets, philosophers and artists met to exchange ideas about literature, poetry, visual art…, often held in a large reception room of a private mansion.

In one way or another I do feel connected with Fleur Rossdale, as from the very first start of my blog until today, I have tried to introduce my readers not only to talented designers, but also to many talented craftspeople and professionals, appealed to by designers to realize their projects.
